Race format

U.I.M. Formula 2 World Cup series venues include Match Race, Speed Record and Grand Prix race.

Match Race is an exciting and spectacular competition where two boats race with each other simultaneously making one short and long lap each. A winner of “the battle” moves up to the next round until there is only one winner who is then the Match Race winner.

Speed Record is usually run shortly before the Match Race competition. The pilot is able to run the boat on clear water alone and its speed is measure by speed radar. Whoever achieves the highest speed is declared the winner of the Speed Record competition.

Grand Prix race is the grand finale of each World Cup venue. At the Grand Prix race participate up to 24 boats that are lined up according to timed trials (best time). The boats all start from the pontoon simultaneously and race for a given number of laps. The boat who completes the required number of laps is the winner of the Grand Prix. It is important to note that due to safety reasons right after the start the boats must maintain their line all the way to the first turn buoy. Despite all the safety precautions, the start is still the most dangerous and also exciting moment of the race as many boats that are left behind must run nearly without any visibility as the water sprays on them from the boats running in front. Unlike in car racing, boats do not have breaks and pilots can be severely punished for the smallest mistakes. That is why Grand Prix race is the most important and prestigious venue and it is a great challenge to for any driver to win a Grand Prix race.

For each event the top ten pilots are awarded points:

Place Point
1 20
2 15
3 12
4 9
5 7
6 5
7 4
8 3
9 2
10 1

Throughout the year all of the points are accumulated in for each event and Overall classification to identifies who has been the most successful pilot in a particular even and overall in all three events. However, the most important are the points accumulated for the Grand Prix races as they determine who will be the winner of the World Cup title.
